Start Up Windows?

Start Up Windows? For most newer computer systems, Windows starts automatically when you turn on your computer. You will see some messages on your computer display screen on startup, then followed by the Windows splash screen (logo). If your set up for multiple users, or if your computer is part of a LAN, you will get a welcome screen and the user accounts defined on the system.

Click on your user account name: if your account requires a password, then type in your password and press ENTER.

Sleeping - If your computer system has been suspended or sleeping, when Windows hasn't been shut down; instead, it is "sleeping." To start up your computer where you left off, you can resume using your computer, just by moving the mouse, pressing a any key, or just opening the cover, if your use a laptop.

If someone locked the Windows computer screen by pressing WINDOWS-L (that is, holding down the WINDOWS key, and typing L). If so, you will see the same Windows welcome screen you saw when first started Windows. You need to click on your user account name to continue, and maybe inter you password.

Note: If your computer's hard disk contains more than one bootable partition (dual boot - contains more than one operating system), you will get the message "Please select the operating system to start," with a list of bootable partitions. Just use the arrow keys to select the operating system you want and press ENTER.

Shutting Down and Restarting Windows: When it's time to turn off your the computer, you should shut down Windows first, that allow Windows to close all its files and do other housekeeping tasks before shutting down. How to shut down Windows, click on Start > then on Turn Off Computer. You can also press ALT-F4, or press CTRL-ESC and then pick Shut Down on the list. WinXpFix.com

Turn Off Computer dialog box, Your options are:

Stand By This stores the programs and data that are currently open, and then shuts down Windows so you can turn the computer off. The next time you start your computer, you will pick up just where you left off last.

Turn Off This shuts down Windows and the computer. Windows will displays a message when it's safely turn off your computer (then turn off the computer on most computers). Please don't turn off your computer until you see the message. Most new computers come with advanced power management that shut off your computer automatically.

Restart This will shuts down Windows, and then reloads (reboot) it. This is very useful if your computer starts acting unreliably. If any programs are running, Windows will closes them before it shutting down. If a program has unsaved files open, the program will ask you if want to save your work before the exits. WinXpFix.com

Turn Off the Computer?

Turn Off the Computer? I recommend you do not turn off your computer when you have finished using it, but do turn off your computer for the night. Windows likes to perform housekeeping tasks when you aren't using the computer, so leaving it on, even when you're not working, is a good idea. You may schedule programs to run at specified times, example, schedule Windows to scan for Viruses or scan your hard drive for errors in the morning. I do recommend that you turn off your monitor when your not using it for an extended amount of time.

Many of the newer computers power down the monitor screen, hard disk, after a set time of inactivity. Your computer itself, however, keeps running. If your monitor screen doesn't power off automatically, you should turn it off when you aren't using the computer for an extended amount of time. Your computer monitor use the biggest share of the electricity used by your computer. WinXpFix.com

How to Shut Down Windows by Itself: Windows now includes OnNow, the technology that powers down your computer when nothing is happening and powers it back up when your computer is needed again, only if your computer's hardware permits it. To use OnNow, click on Start > Control Panel, then click on Performance And Maintenance, and then just run the Power Options program.

Window Suspending: Some newer computers have a Suspend Mode, Hibernate Mode, or Standby Mode in which your computer remains on, but the disk drives, and monitor screen turn off. If your computer has this mode, a Stand By option appears on the Turn Off Computer dialog box. To switch your computer to Suspend Mode, click on Start > then pick Turn Off Computer and click on Stand By. To wake up your computer that's y powered itself down, just press the SHIFT key a few times. WinXpFix.com

Ueing Single-Click or Double-Click?

Using Single-Click or Double-Click? You may choose how the icons on your Windows desktop and in Explorer windows behave just as you could in Windows 98/Me/2000.

The choices are:

The Single-Click (Web style) To select the icon without opening it, just move your mouse pointer to the icon without clicking on it, then wait just a second. Click it once to run or open the icon. Icon labels should appear underlined, just like Web page links. WinXpFix.com

The Double-Click (This is the classic Windows style) Click it once to select the icon. Click on it twice to run or open the icon. The Icon labels are not underlined.

Here's The steps to choose between single- and double-click:

1. Click on Start > Then Control Panel. Now click the Appearance And Themes category.

2. Click on the Folder Options icon at the bottom of the Appearance And Themes window. You will see the Folder Options dialog box. Now if the General tab isn't selected, click on it.

3. In side the Click Items As Follows box, pick Single-click or Double-click. If you picked Single-click, you need to choose whether you want icon titles to be underlined all the time (Consistent With My Browser) or only when your mouse pointer is on the icon (Only When I Point At Them). then click on OK.

Tip: You can right-click icons to see a shortcut menu of commands you can perform on the icon, Whether you using single-click or double-click. WinXpFix.com
