Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP:

NEW - Window XP PowerToys are additional programs that developers work on after a product has been released to manufacturing. They add fun and functionality to the Windows experience!

Microsoft has taken great care to ensure that PowerToys operate as they should, but they are not part of Windows and are not supported by Microsoft. For this reason, Microsoft Technical Support is unable to answer questions about PowerToys.

Microsoft Releases XP PowerToys Update: Months after it originally removed PowerToys for Windows XP from download, Microsoft developers have finally released the long awaited update to the popular tools. PowerToys are a group of small applications that add extra functionality to Windows XP by taking advantage of hidden settings. A Microsoft spokesperson said the need to make minor improvements as the reason for pulling PowerToys and promised an update in the spring.

You must uninstall your old PowerToys before installing the new ones.

With this PowerToy, in addition to seeing the icon of the application window you are switching to, you will also see a preview of the page. This helps particularly when multiple sessions of an application are open.

Use this PowerToy to magnify part of the screen from the taskbar.

Power Calculator:
With this PowerToy you can graph and evaluate functions as well as perform many different types of conversions.

Image Resizer;
This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.

With this PowerToy you can view images burned to a CD as a slide show. The Generator works downlevel on Windows 9x machines as well.

This PowerToy lets you take pictures at specified time intervals from a Webcam connected to your computer and save them to a location that you designate.

Webcam TimershotTip:

Microsoft recently released a free download for Windows XP called PowerToys. These are a set of utilities and enhancements for Windows XP that add many new features and functions. Seasoned Windows users swear by the PowerToys for past Windows versions, and this latest crop of toys will not disappoint them. They are not officially supported by Microsoft, so they are install-at-your-own-risk.

One of the PowerToys that you may find useful is the Webcam Timershot. This toy allows you to use a webcam to snap (and save) pictures to a file at specified time intervals. You can customize the name and location of the file, and whether that file is overwritten with the most recent snapshot.

Change the Start Menu Style:

Change the Start Menu Style:

Does the new Windows XP Start menu take up too much space on your desktop? You can easily change the look back to the Windows Classic Start menu by following these steps:

* Right–click the Start button, and then click Properties.
* Click Classic Start menu.
* Click the Customize button to select items to display on the Start menu.

By default, selecting the Classic Start menu also adds the My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places, and Internet Explorer icons to your desktop.

Turn on XP Personal Firewall Tip:

Windows XP has included basic Personal Firewall software so that you can help hide and protect your computer against attacks from the Internet. If your computer is connected to the Internet, you should turn this feature on (unless you have purchased a more robust third-party firewall package). To turn on Personal Firewall, Open Control Panel (click Start -> Control Panel), then open Network and Internet Connections, and then Network Connections.

Find your connection to the Internet (for instance, under Dial-Up), right-click it and choose Properties. In the box that appears, click the Advanced tab. In the top section, check (click) the box next to "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet." Click OK, and bask in the glow of the feeling that comes from knowing you've made your computer just a little more inaccessible to the bad guys.

Check Personal Firewall Status Tip:

In the previous tip, I mention how to turn on Windows XP's Personal Firewall feature. But once you turn it on, your connection looks just the same as it did before. How can you check the status of the connection and the firewall? Simply open Control Panel from the Start Menu, open Internet and Network Connections, then Network Connections. By default the view is of large icons.

Click the View Menu, and choose "details" in order to reveal several more columns of information about the connections that your computer has. Check the Status column to see if your connection is currently connected, and whether or not it is "firewalled." You can even drag the column headings around (I like to slide the Status column right next to the Name column. You can even remove entire columns by right-clicking the column heading and unchecking it.

Java VM: Java applets run in Internet Explorer 6:

Easy Text Size Change in Help & IE Tip:

I mentioned a way that you can change the size of the text that is display in the Help file and in Internet Explorer. As it turns out if you have a "wheel mouse," there is an even easier way to change the text size. In Internet Explorer or when viewing a Help file, simply hold the ctrl key while you spin the mouse wheel up to increase text size, or down to decrease text size.

Java VM: Java applets run in Internet Explorer 6 (a component of Windows XP) just as they run in older versions of Internet Explorer. The Java VM is not installed as part of the typical installation, but is installed on demand when a user encounters a page that uses a Java Applet. For more information see the Microsoft Technologies for Java Web site.

Windows XP Shutdown and Power Off Tip:

On some computers, by default, Windows XP doesn't power off the computer when you tell it to shut down. However, if your computer is relatively new, it can probably by shut completely off by WinXP. To configure your computer for this behavior, simply open the Control Panel, open Performance and Maintenance, then Power Options. On the APM tab, check next to "Enable Advanced Power Management support," then click OK. The next time you choose "Shut Down" from the Start Menu, your computer should shut down completely and then power off.

Net Detective - is an amazing new tool that allows you to "Find out the TRUTH about anyone" if you ever wanted to know about your friends, family, neighbors, employees, and even your boss!" You can even check out yourself. It is all completely legal , and you can do it all in the privacy of your own home without anyone ever knowing. It's even better than hiring a private investigator. Customize Explorer Toolbar Tip:

In Windows Explorer, you can customize the toolbar to make Explorer even more handy. The Toolbar is the bar of icons directly underneath the menu bar. It contains icons for going back, up one level, displaying folders or search, etc. You can right-click an open area of this Toolbar and choose Customize to change the order of these icons, and even to add new icons to it. For instance, I like to add the Map Drive and Disconnect buttons. In Windows XP, you may have to unlock the Taskbar before you can make changes in Windows Explorer.

Lock the Taskba - If you find that your Windows XP Taskbar keeps being changed, or moved to one side or the top of your screen, and you didn't mean to have it do that, this tip is for you. Once you have your Task Bar arranged the way you like it, in the right location on the screen, and with all the right toolbars and icons, you can lock it, so that it won't get changed accidentally. To lock the Taskbar, simply right click it and choose Properties. In the window that appears, check the box (click) next to "Lock the Taskbar." Now you won't accidentally bump the mouse and have your Task bar end up on another side of the screen.

Windows XP Product Activation:

By Raymond
Windows XP Product Activation:

Windows XP retail products contain software-based product activation technology, which means you need to activate your copy of Windows XP in order to use it. Some new PCs purchased with Windows XP pre-installed will also require activation. If your organization licenses Windows XP through one of Microsoft’s volume licensing agreement programs such as Open License and Select License, you will not be required to activate those Windows XP licenses.

The Microsoft Windows XP Product Activation is an anti-piracy technology designed to verify that software products have been legitimately licensed. This aims to reduce a form of piracy known as casual copying. Activation also helps protect against hard drive cloning. Activation is quick, simple, and unobtrusive, and it protects your privacy.

The Product Activation works by verifying that a software program's product key has not been used on more personal computers than intended by the software's license. You must use the product key in order to install the software and then it is transformed into an installation ID number. You use an activation wizard to provide the installation ID number to Microsoft either through a secure transfer over the Internet, or by telephone. A confirmation ID is sent back to your machine to activate your product.

The installation ID number includes an encrypted form of the product ID and a hardware hash, or checksum. No personally identifying data is included or required. The confirmation ID is simply an unlocking code for the Windows XP installation on that particular PC.

If you overhaul your computer by replacing a substantial number of hardware components, it may appear to be a different PC. You may have to reactivate Windows XP. If this should occur, you can call the telephone number displayed on the activation screen to reactivate the software.

If you have not activated Windows XP, you will be reminded each time you log in and at common intervals until the end of the activation grace period of 30 days. If you have not activated Windows XP within this timeframe, you will need to do so to continue using it. (Game Over)

If you choose to activate your product over the Internet, upon your submission the activation wizard will detect your Internet connection and connect to a secure server to transfer your installation ID to Microsoft. A confirmation ID is passed back to your computer, automatically activating Windows XP. This process normally takes just a few seconds to complete. No personally identifiable information is required to activate Windows XP.

If you want to activate Windows XP over the telephone, you can simply call a toll-free* number displayed on your screen. A Microsoft customer service representative will ask for the installation ID number displayed on the same screen, enter that number into a secure database, and return a confirmation ID to you. Once you have typed the confirmation ID, the activation process is complete.
