Making a Windows XP Boot Disk!
XP Home Edition Utility: Setup Disks for floppy boot install. ~ (Boot Disk)

The Windows XP startup disk allows computers without a bootable CD-ROM to perform a new installation of the operating system. The Windows XP startup disk will automatically load the correct drivers to gain access to the CD-ROM drive and start a new installation of Setup. You cannot upgrade from a Windows XP startup disk. WinXpFix.com

Windows XP Home Edition startup disks will not work for Windows XP Professional installations and vice-versa.

How~2 make a Floppy Boot Disk with a Windows XP- Computer:

You need to format a floppy disk by using the Windows XP format utility. Put a floppy disk in the floppy disk drive, type format a: at a command prompt, and then hit ENTER.

You need to copy the Ntldr and the Ntdetect.com files from the I386 folder on the Windows XP Setup CD-ROM, Windows XP Setup floppy disk, or from a computer that is running the same version of Windows XP as the your computer.

You need to create a Boot.ini file (or copy one from a computer that is running Windows XP), and then modify it to match the computer that you are trying to access. This example works for a single-partition IDE drive with Windows XP installed in the \WINDOWS folder, but the exact value in the [operating systems] section depends on the configuration of the Windows XP computer that you are trying to access:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
Default= multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Windows XP"

Note: If your computer boots from a SCSI hard drive, you may need to replace the multi(0) entry with scsi(0). If you are using scsi(x) in the Boot.ini file, copy the correct device driver for the SCSI controller in use on the computer to the root of the Setup disk, and then rename it Ntbootdd.sys. Change the disk(0) number to represent the SCSI-ID of the hard drive you want to boot to. If you are using multi(x) in the Boot.ini file, you do not need to do this. WinXpFix.com

How~2 Booting (starting) your computer by using the floppy disk, and then log on to Windows XP:

How~2 make a Boot Floppy Disk Without a Windows XP-Based Computer:

Download and create the Windows XP Setup disks by using a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me):

Obtaining Windows XP Setup Boot Disks
Delete all the files from the newly created Setup disk 1.

Copy the Ntdetect.com and the Ntldr files from the I386 folder on the Windows XP CD-ROM to the new disk.

Rename the Ntldr file to Setupldr.bin.

Create a Boot.ini file. The following example works for a single-partition IDE drive with Windows XP installed in the \WINDOWS folder, but the exact value in the [operating systems] section depends on the configuration of the Windows XP computer that you want to boot:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
Default= multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows="Windows XP"
If your computer boots from a SCSI hard drive, you may need to replace the multi(0) entry with scsi(0).

Boot Into Safe Mode Tip:

Nothing can be more frustrating than when your computer won't boot properly. Whether you've made a recent change, installed a bad driver, or whatever, sometimes the darn thing just won't come back up right after powering down. There is a hidden boot menu in Windows XP that has an option that can help. When the Operating System first starts (after the power on self test), press the F8 key on your keyboard.

This will display a menu on a black background, which has an option called "Safe Mode." Actually there are a couple different Safe Mode options, depending on whether you want to use the network, or just a command prompt. Choosing Safe Mode will allow you to at least boot up, so that you can uninstall a bad driver, or change problematic system settings, etc.

Create Windows XP Boot Floppy

Windows 9x/ME users will not be surprised by this tip, but Windows NT/2000 users will be relieved to hear that Windows XP includes the ability to easily create a boot floppy. In previous versions of NT/2000, which XP is built upon, you had to look to other operating systems if you needed to boot to a floppy disk.

To create a bootable floppy, simply put a disk in the floppy drive, and right-click the drive from Windows Explorer or from My Computer. From the context menu that appears, click on "Format..." When the Format 3 1/2 Floppy window that appears, check (click) the box next to "Create an MS-DOS startup disk." The computer will take it from there, and will place the necessary boot files on the floppy disk.

Tip-within-a-tip: Your new boot floppy won't really boot to Windows XP. When you boot to it, and end up with an A:> prompt, type "ver" without the quotes and press enter. It's actually Windows Millennium that you're running!
