How to Turn Off IE Clicking Noise!

A few versions ago, Microsoft added a clicking noise to Internet Explorer, so that each time you click on a link with the mouse, you hear an audible click. This is cute at first, but you may find it annoying after a while. This feature can be turned off in the Control Panel.

To turn it off In Windows XP open the Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices (it's just Sounds & Multimedia in Windows 2000) then Sounds and Audio Devices, then on the Sounds tab, scroll down to the section for Windows Explorer. Click the event called "Start Navigation," and change the setting to "none" from the dropdown box. Click OK to apply the change, and from now on you can navigate clicklessly through cyberspace. Windows XP Shutdown and Power Off Tip!

On some computers, by default, Windows XP doesn't power off the computer when you tell it to shut down. However, if your computer is relatively new, it can probably by shut completely off by WinXP.

This is how to configure your computer for this behavior, you simply open the Control Panel, open Performance and Maintenance, then Power Options. On the APM tab, check next to "Enable Advanced Power Management support," then click OK. The next time you choose "Shut Down" from the Start Menu, your computer should shut down completely and then power off. WinXpFix.com

How to Start Applications from the Command Window!

It is sometimes quicker for you to start applications by pressing CTRL-R, which is the same as clicking Start -> Run. Typing in the command and pressing Enter launches the application. For example, You can start Solitaire in less than a second by pressing CTRL-R, typing SOL, and pressing Enter. It could take you much longer to click Start, Programs, Accessories, Games, Solitaire.

For instance, to start the Registry Editor, you press CTRL-R, type "CMD" without the quotes, and press Enter (for Win9x/ME, I would type "command" instead of "CMD"). From the c:\ prompt, I then type "regedit" or whatever command starts the application, and then press Enter. This is handy tip. WinXpFix.com

Turn It On - Windows XP Personal Firewall

Microsoft Windows XP has included basic Personal Firewall software so that you can help protect your computer against attacks from the Internet. If your computer is connected to the Internet, you should turn this feature on (unless you have purchased a more robust third-party firewall package).

The steps to turn on Windows XP Personal Firewall, Go to and open Control Panel (click Start -> Control Panel), then open Network and Internet Connections, and then Network Connections. Find your connection to the Internet (for instance, under Dial-Up), right-click it and choose Properties. In the box that appears, click the Advanced tab. In the top section, check (click) the box next to "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet." Click OK, Now you've made your computer just a little more inaccessible to the bad boys. WinXpFix.com

How to Check your Personal Firewall Status Tip!

In the previous tip, you turn on Windows XP's Personal Firewall feature. But once you turn it on, your connection looks about the same as it did before. You need to check the status of the connection and the firewall.

Go to and open Control Panel from the Start Menu, open Internet and Network Connections, then Network Connections. By default the view is of large icons. Click the View Menu, and choose "details" in order to reveal several more columns of information about the connections that your computer has. Check the Status column to see if your connection is currently connected, and whether or not it is "firewalled." You can even drag the column headings around or remove entire columns by right-clicking the column heading and unchecking it. WinXpFix.com

Webcam Timershot Tip!

Microsoft recently released a free download for Windows XP called PowerToys. These are a set of free utilities and enhancements for Windows XP that add many new features and functions. Some Windows users swear by the PowerToys for past Windows versions, and this latest group of toys will not disappoint them. The PowerToys are not officially supported by Microsoft, so you are install-at-your-own-risk.

One of the many PowerToys that you may find very useful is the Webcam Timershot. This toy allows you to use a webcam to snap (and save) pictures to a file at specified time intervals. You can may customize the name and location of the file, and whether that file is overwritten with the most recent snapshot. WinXpFix.com

Media Player Privacy Tip!

When you play CDs with newer versions of Media Player, this handy little application will go out to the Internet and return with handy information for you such as information about the CD such as the play list, album cover, artists, etc. However, in the latest version (8.x), another feature has been added that may have privacy implications. When you open the Media Player (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Media Player) and choose Options from the Tools Menu, you will see an option called "Allow most Internet sites to uniquely identify your player?"

What this does is to potentially allow other sites to monitor what you are listening to or watching with Media Player. If you read the Help File, it claims that the purpose of uniquely identifying your player (using an identifier that your Media Player sends) is to monitor the connection quality when streaming audio or video files. That maybe all it is being used for -- for now. If you want to turn off this feature, all you have to do uncheck box and click OK. WinXpFix.com

Net Detective - is an amazing new tool that allows you to "Find out the TRUTH about anyone" if you ever wanted to know about your friends, family, neighbors, employees, and even your boss!" You can even check out yourself. It is all completely legal , and you can do it all in the privacy of your own home without anyone ever knowing. It's even better than hiring a private investigator.
