Windows XP includes software for creating CDs!

The Basics: By Raymond, WInXpFix.com - If you're considering buying a CD-ROM recorder or re-writable but, you're a lettle confused about the difference. The CD-ROM recording technology changes quickly, and it's very easy to get a lettle confused. The CD-Recorder (also called CD burner or CD writer, CD-R drive, ) can record (write, burn) to one blank CD-Recordable disc at a time. The CDR disc can be burned or recorded on to only once, although with the proper settings in multi-session supported software, you can add to the disc in more than one recording session until it is full. This is called "multi-session" recording. The disc cannot be erased and used again.

You can create two different kinds of CDs - CD-R and CD-RW!

CD-R (compact disk recordable) disks can be written on once ( Write Once, Read Many). They can't be changed after they are written (though you can write on them many times until they are filled up). You can read CD-R discs in normal computer CD-ROM drives, as well as in audio CD players, so CD-R is the type of CD to use when creating music CDs or CDs to distribute to lots of people. Blank CD-Rs are relatively cheap!

CD-RW (compact disk rewritable) disks can be written and rewritten about 1000 times, like a floppy disk. You can use them as backup files on your computer or as removable storage for sets of files that you want to update regularly. However, they are only readable in other CD-RW drives or CDR dirves that are labeled that the drive can read CDRW discs.

The two types of writable CDs hold approximately the same amount of data: about 650MB for 74-minute discs and about 700 MB for 80-minute discs. CD-R drives can write only CD-R discs, not CD-RW discs. CD-RW drives can write both types of discs.

CD Burning Basics Tips:

Windows Xp
CD-Burning Basics Tips !

To burn a CD-R or CD-RW, you collect a group of files that you want to save on the CD, and then write them in one session. You can write multiple sessions to both CD-R and CD-RW disks, but not all CD-ROM drives will be able to read them: Audio CD players usually see only the first session on a CD-R disk, and data CD-ROM drives some times see only the last session.

Previous versions of Windows required third-party software (Easy CD Creator or Nero) to save files on CD-Rs and CD-RWs. If you do a lot of work with CD-Rs and CD-RWs you may still find it more convenient to get software like Easy CD Creator. However, Windows XP has integrates CDs burning into Windows Explorer. When you put a CD-R or CD-RW disc into your CD-R or CD-RW drive, Explorer recognizes what kind of disc it is and integrates it into the folder tree.

Before you can start to store files on a CD, you need to decide what files to include in the session and how you want them arranged before you write any of them to the disc. For this reason, Windows Xp provides a staging area on your hard drive that has the same capacity as the CD you plan to write. As you move files to and from the icon of your CD-R or CD-RW drive, the files are not actually written to the CD, but instead are copied to the staging area. WinXpFix.com

Burning CDs from Windows Explorer:

Windows Xp
Burning CDs from Windows Explorer !

You can use Windows Explorer to Burn your files to a CDR or CDRW disc. OK once you know what you want to copy on to your CD, and know whether you have a CD-R or CD-RW recording drive, you can follow these steps to create your CD-R or CD-RW disc!

1. Buy some blank CD discs from your local computer store. Watch out for sales and rebates that's the best time to stock up on blank CDs. I ones bought a box of 100 blank CDs for $39. USD with a mail in rebate for $39. USD, net cost after mail in rebate $0. Make sure to check whether you are buying CD-R or CD-RW disks.

2. Put a disc in the CD-R drive and close the drawer. Windows Xp will indicates that it has detected a CD by flashing a CD-ROM icon next to your mouse pointer. After Windows Xp scans the disc and determines that it is a blank disc, an Explorer window for the disk opens.

3. Drag and drop or copy all items that you wish to store on the disc into the new window and arrange them into folders as you like. For audio discs, arrange the files into the order in which you want the tracks to appear. Your data will appear on the disc in exactly the same way you arrange it.

4. Now click on Copy Files To CD button in the Task pane. You will see the Windows CD Copy Wizard.
Follow the wizard's instructions and wait, It takes approximately 10 - 20 minutes to burn a CD. The more information or files you are writing on the CD, the longer it takes to completely burn.

5. Test your new CD in the type of drive in which you want use it on. Try it on a audio CD player, computer CD drive, CD-R drive. Tip: You can test burn your files to a CD-RW disc, if it doesn't work out you can record over it again. WinXpFix.com

Add ability to rip MP3 songs in Windows Media Player 8

If you have a superload of CDs that you would like to rip them into MP3. Yes it can be done technically and that too from Windows Media Player even though make sure you have legally on right side of fence, meaning you own the CD that you would rip MP3 from. That said here is the little tweak in registry.

Open Registry by going to START-RUN and typing REGEDIT. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayerSettings\MP3Encoding] and adding following entries
"LowRate"=dword:0000dac0
"MediumRate"=dword:0000fa00
"MediumHighRate"=dword:0001f400
"HighRate"=dword:0002ee00
which corresponds to 56, 64, 128 and 192 Kbps. Following table would help with other settings as well:

320 Kbps = dword:0004e200
256 Kbps = dword:0003e800
224 Kbps = dword:00036b00
160 Kbps = dword:00027100
112 Kbps = dword:0001b580
