Priority Tweaking Tip:

Priority Tweaking Tip: You can tweak how you're applications run in XP by changing the priority at which they are run. This may dramatically increase the speed of the luna theme and XP in general.

- Open TaskManager (Ctrl+Alt+Del or Ctrl+Shift+Esc)
- Goto the Processes tab
- Right Click Program- Set Priority
- Now you can set the application to the priority of your choice. Remember you can speed your system up or slow your system down so try and keep things balanced. WinXpFix.com

Customize the Start Menu:

You can choose several options to customize your Start menu including selecting large icons and specifying the number of programs you want to display on your Start menu. The size of icons and number of items on the Start menu can benefit people with vision impairments and cognitive/learning disorders. This procedure tells you how to customize the Start menu through Taskbar and Start Menu Properties in Control Panel.

1. On the Start menu: Select Control Panel.

2. In Control Panel: Be sure you are in Classic View (all Control Panel icons are showing). If not, under control Panel in the left pane, select Switch to Classic View. Select Taskbar and Start Menu.

3. In the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box: Select the Start Menu tab.

4. On the Start Menu tab: Select Start Menu. Select the Customize button.

5. In the Customize Start Menu dialog box, on the General tab: Under Select an icon size for programs, choose:
Large icons, or
Small icons.
Under Programs:
Choose the number of programs you want to appear on the Start menu.
Under Show on Start menu:
Select an Internet program from the list of installed programs.
Select an E–mail program from the list of installed programs.
Select OK twice.

6. To close Control Panel: Select the Close button.

Using Narrator:

Narrator is designed to work with Notepad, WordPad, Control Panel programs, Internet Explorer, the Windows desktop, and some parts of Windows Setup. Narrator may not read words aloud correctly in other programs. Narrator has a number of options that allow you to customize the way screen elements are read. You can:

* Have new windows, menus, or shortcut menus read aloud when they are displayed.
* Have typed characters read aloud.
* Have the mouse pointer follow the active item on the screen.
* Adjust the speed, volume or pitch of the voice.

The accessibility tools that ship with Windows are intended to provide a minimum level of functionality for users with special needs. Most users with disabilities will need utility programs with more advanced functionality for daily use.

Notes:

An easy way to start Narrator is to press the Windows logo key + U. Narrator is set to start by default when Utility Manager starts. However, Narrator may not start if your computer does not have text-to-speech program capability.
You can start Accessibility programs before logging on to the computer by pressing the Windows logo key + U at the Welcome to Windows dialog box that appears when Windows starts.
Narrator is not available for all languages and is only supported on the English version of Windows XP.

Windows XP to allow 4 hardware changes:

The Product Activation software found in Office XP and the upcoming Operating System from Microsoft, Windows XP, will limit the changes in hardware to 4 for systems with Windows XP. The Product Activation in Windows XP accepts only 4 hardware changes before requiring re-activation because with any more changes the software will think it's on another system. Also, firmware updates will require re-activation from Microsoft.

Automated System Recovery:

Windows XP Home Edition, you can create a System Restore Point to help you if you need to recover or restore your computer system back to a certain point in time. But what if you use Windows XP Professional Edition? In your case, you should employ the Automated System Recovery Wizard to help you restore your computer system when disaster strikes. The Automated System Recovery Wizard will walk you through the steps of creating both a backup set (very large file) and a Recovery Disk (floppy). To use the Wizard, follow these steps:

* Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup.

* When the Backup or Restore Wizard starts, click on Advanced Mode.

* On the Welcome tab, click the button at the bottom next to Automated System Recovery Wizard.

* This will start the Wizard, which will prompt you for the media to use for the backup file, after clicking Next.

* If you have a tape drive installed, this file can go there, but you can also write this file to a hard drive. This is the fastest method, but it also requires lots of free space. A writeable CD will work, if the CDRW software allows it to be access via a drive letter.

* After entering the destination for the backup file, click Next again, and then Finish.

* The Windows XP Backup utility will copy all of the important system files and settings to the backup file. An estimate and status bar is provided, as this step can take a considerable amount of time. After this step is complete, you will be prompted for a blank, formatted floppy disk. Several files are written to the disk, and then the process is complete.

NOTE: Keep in mind that this process will only help you restore your computer system - you will need a separate plan for backing up your data files for instance Word documents, spreadsheets that you have created.
