Windows XP Does Not Respond at "Setup Is Starting Windows
XP" Tip:
How to troubleshoot Windows if Windows Text-mode Setup
stops responding (hangs) while the "Setup is starting
Windows" message is displayed.
MORE INFORMATION
The following items can cause Setup to stop responding
while the "Setup is starting Windows" message
is displayed:
An incorrect mass-storage device (such as a SCSI or IDE
controller) driver is being loaded, or the driver was
not written for Windows and is not compatible. Contact
the device's manufacturer or download the latest driver
for the mass-storage device.
There is a device connected to your mass-storage device
that is preventing Windows from being installed. Remove
any devices (such as scanners, tape drives, removable
drives, and so on) from the mass-storage device controller.
If the computer is IDE-based, verify that you have the
master and slave designations set properly. If the mass-storage
controller is SCSI-based, verify that the termination
and bus speed is set properly.
The computer does not have the latest BIOS revision. Contact
the computer's manufacturer or check the manufacturer's
Web site. Many manufacturers have updated their BIOS revisions
to properly support Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
(ACPI).
An ACPI Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) is being used
during Setup. Force the use of a non-ACPI HAL during Setup.
Computer That Has ASUS P2B Motherboard Stops Responding
After Windows XP Installation:
When you install Windows XP on a computer that uses an
ASUS P2B motherboard, the computer may stop responding
(hang). The Processes tab in Task Manager may show that
the CPU is using 100 percent of the system resources.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because of a hardware problem
with the ASUS P2B motherboard.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, turn off the Wake up if
mouse is moved setting in the computer's BIOS. Refer to
the computer documentation for more information, or contact
the computer manufacturer if you need assistance with
changing this setting.
Computer Stops Responding When You Install Windows
XP on a Computer with an i815 Chip Set Motherboard:
When you attempt to install Microsoft Windows XP on a
computer that is using the Intel i815 chip set and has
a universal serial bus (USB) keyboard and mouse attached,
you may experience the following behavior:
* The computer may stop responding (hang) during Setup.
* Windows XP has been installed.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if Legacy USB support is enabled
in your computer's BIOS. This option does not need to
be used on Windows XP-based computers.
RESOLUTION
The following resolution is specific to computers that
have a USB mouse and keyboard attached and a motherboard
with an i815 chip set. However, note that there are other
potential reasons for a computer to exhibit the same symptoms.
Clear the Legacy USB support option in your computer's
BIOS.
Refer to your computer manufacturer's documentation for
more information regarding the location of this setting
in your BIOS.
If the Legacy USB support option is not selected or available
to you, work around this issue by temporarily using a
PS/2 mouse and keyboard instead of USB-based devices until
the BIOS setting can be modified. WinXpFix.com
