How~2 Dual Boot Windows XP Tips:

Dual Boot Windows XP: Question, will Windows Xp allow me to dual boot between Windows~Me and Windows~XP. I would love to have both operating systems on my system so I can chose which one I want to use at boot time.

The answer is yes, I've installed Windows~XP on my 2nd HDD and left Win Me on the primary 1st HDD and everything is working great. It will also work just fine if you have Windows~ME on one partition and Windows~XP on the other partition on the same HDD.

A dual-boot or multiboot installation is an installation of Windows that leaves another operating system intact on your computer. When you start your computer, you can decide which operating system to run. In order to keep the versions of Windows separate, you install each in a separate partition.

Windows Setup Wizard can create a new partition if your hard disk has unused, unpartitioned space. It can install Windows XP into this new partition, leaving your existing operating system intact. You do not need to use a third-party partitioning program.

But, you may want to get a third-party partitioning program like PartitionMagic or BootIt NG to adjust the sizes of your existing partitions to make space for Windows XP. It's up to you. WinXpFix.com

Before you use the multibooting feature, you should consider the tradeoffs: each of the operating system (OS) uses valuable disk space, and file system compatibility can be very complex if you want to run Windows XP on one partition and an earlier OS on another partition. In addition, dynamic disk format introduced in Windows 2000 does not work with earlier operating systems. However, multibooting capabilities are a valuable feature providing the single-machine flexibility to run multiple operating systems.

Before you install Windows XP and an earlier version on the same machine, you must prepare your hard disk with different partitions.

When installing Windows on a new or reformatted hard disk, the Setup program typically does not partition your hard disk automatically. To create multiple partitions, choose Advanced Options during Setup and follow the instructions to create and name multiple partitions. You can also create partitions using Fdisk.

You can divide your hard disk into multiple partitions, and each partition can function as a separate logical drive. For example, logical drives C: and D: can both exist on the same hard disk, but function as separate disks. You should install each operating system on a different partition. Then install applications on the same partition as the operating system with which you run them. If an application is used with two different operating systems, install copies on both partitions. Placing each operating system in a separate partition ensures that it will not overwrite crucial files used by the other OS.

A basic disk can contain up to four partitions. Each partition can be formatted for use by a file system, such as FAT32 or NTFS.

In general, you should always install the most recent OS last. In this case, you should install Windows 2000 and then install Windows XP.

You can set up your computer so that it has multiple installations of Windows XP and Windows 2000 Professional. But, you must use a different computer name for each installation if the computer participates in a Windows 2000 Server domain. Because a unique security identifier (SID) is used for each installation of Windows XP on a domain, the computer name for each installation must be unique—even for multiple installations on the same computer. WinXpFix.com

Checklist:
To configure your computer containing Windows 2000 and Windows XP, fallow these following guidelines:

* You should Install each operating system on a separate drive or disk partition.

* Install Windows XP after you have installed Windows 2000.

* When you perform a new installation of Windows XP (as opposed to an upgrade), by default, the installation is placed on a partition on which no other operating system is located. You can specify a partition during Setup.

*Don’t install Windows XP on a compressed drive unless the drive was compressed with the NTFS file system compression feature.

* On any partition where you perform a new installation of Windows XP you will need to reinstall any programs, such as word processing or e-mail software, after your Setup is completed.

* Install your programs used by each operating system on the partition with that system. If you want your programs to run with multiple operating systems, you need to install separate copies of the programs in each of the operating system partitions.

* If your computer is on a Windows 2000 Server domain, each installation of Windows XP on that computer must have a different computer name.

Computers that have Windows 95, 98 (or Windows Me) and Windows XP:

* Windows 95, 98 or Windows Me must be installed on a basic disk on a partition formatted with FAT or FAT32. If Windows 98 or Windows Me is not installed on the system partition, which is almost always the first partition on the disk, the system partition must also be formatted with FAT or FAT32. (For Windows 95 OSR2, FAT32 may be used.) If Windows 95 is not installed on the system partition, which is almost always the first partition on the disk, the system partition must also be formatted with FAT (or FAT32 for Windows 95 OSR2).

* Compressed DriveSpace or DoubleSpace volumes won’t be available while you are running Windows XP. It is not necessary to uncompress DriveSpace or DoubleSpace volumes that you will access only with Windows 98.

* Remember Windows XP must be installed last. Otherwise important files needed for starting Windows XP could be overwritten.

Note: On a dual-boot system with Windows NT or Windows 3.1, you can't use FAT32 for your data partition, because Windows NT and Windows 3.1 don't support FAT32 (as Windows 2000, Me, 98, and XP do). On a dual-boot system with Windows Me or 9x, you can't use an NTFS partition for your data partition, since these versions of Windows can't read it.

How~2 Multiple Boot Windows XP Tips:

Dual-booting with Windows 2000, Unix, or Linux
By Raymond

You can not use the Windows Setup Wizard to create a dual-boot system with Windows 2000 and Windows XP. This's because the Wizard will want to upgrade Windows 2000's NTFS partition to Windows XP's slightly newer NTFS format, and Windows 2000 will no longer be able to read its own partition. But, a third-party partitioning programs provide a way to create a dual-boot system with Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Except by using a third-party partitioning program to create a new partition for Windows XP and to hide the Windows 2000 partition. Then install Windows XP on the new, blank partition. You can use this method for dueal-booting system with Unix or Linux. WinXpFix.com

How~2 Multiple Boot Windows XP Tips:
By Raymond

Here's how to configure an Intel-based computer to multiple boot MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP.

Note:
If you want to multiple boot operating systems (Dual Boot), you should install the operating systems in the following order:

MS-DOS

Windows 95, 98, Me.

Windows NT

Windows 2000

Windows XP

Install each operating system according to the standard installation procedure. You can start Windows 95 or Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP from the boot loader (Osloader) screen.

NOTE : You should install each operating system (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP) on a separate logical drive. If you install multiple operating systems on single drive, there may be problems running the operating systems. WinXpFix.com

If you have installed multiple operating systems on a single drive, Microsoft Internet Explorer may quit and you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:

iexplore caused an Invalid Page Fault in module kernel32.dll

You can configure your computer to start Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT, and either Windows 95 or Windows 98; however, you cannot configure a computer to multiple boot Windows 95 and Windows 98 because both Windows 95 and Windows 98 use the same boot file. Therefore, multiple booting Windows 95 and Windows 98 at the same time is not supported.

You should install Windows 95, 98, Me before you install Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. This is the order that is recommended because a Windows 95 or Windows 98 boot sector may replace a Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT boot sector with its own boot sector. Because a Windows 95 or Windows 98 boot sector identifies the partition as a FAT16 partition, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP can no longer access NTFS volumes. To install Windows 95 or Windows 98 first, use the installation procedures that are provided with Windows 95, 98, Me.

If you want to multiple boot Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 95, 98, Me with MS-DOS, install MS-DOS first.

How~2 Install Windows 95 or Windows 98 in a Windows XP, Windows 2000 and MS-DOS, or a Windows NT and MS-DOS Multiple-Boot Configuration

To Install Windows 95, 98, Me in a Windows XP, Windows 2000, and MS-DOS, or a Windows NT and MS-DOS multiple-boot configuration:

When you start your computer, choose MS-DOS from the menu on the boot loader screen.

Install Windows 95, 98, Me in a folder separate from the Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows NT %SystemRoot% folder.

After you successfully install Windows 95, or 98, or Me, and restart your computer, the Windows XP or Windows 2000 boot loader screen appears, and you can choose between MS-DOS and Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows NT. If you choose MS-DOS, Windows 95, or 98, or Me, starts.

Dual-booting with Windows Me or 9x

How~2 create a dual-boot system with Windows XP and Windows Me or 9x, install the older version of Windows first, and then install Windows XP. During the installation process, Windows XP creates a file named Boot.ini in C:\, listing the bootable partitions and which partition is the default. When the Setup Wizard displays the Setup Options window, click the Advanced Options button and select the I Want to Choose the Install Drive Letter and Partition During Setup check box.

Using this setting causes the Setup Wizard to display a list of your partitions and enables you to choose the partition in which you want to display Windows XP. You also have the option of deleting existing partitions and creating new ones. The next section steps through the installation process. WinXpFix.com

Now that you have both versions of Windows installed in separate primary DOS partitions, you can switch back and forth by using the boot menu that Windows XP displays:

Please select the operating system to start:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Microsoft Windows

You can use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Press ENTER to choose.
Seconds until highlighted choice will be started automatically: 30

Windows Me, 98, and 95 appear simply as "Microsoft Windows" by default. You can change the text and entries in this boot menu, as described in the "Setting Boot Options" section later in this appendix.

How~2 Setting Boot Options Tips:

Setting Boot Options:
By Raymond

Windows XP includes support for multiple partitions and multiple operating systems (it inherits this ability from Windows NT/2000). The boot program (Ntldr) is stored in the root folder of the first partition on the first disk. Ntldr reads the Boot.ini file, which is stored in the same folder, to find out which partitions you might want to boot from, which partition to use as the default, what to display in the boot menu, and how long to wait before loading the operating system from the default partition. If the boot menu contains only one option, you won't see it--Ntldr simply boots from that partition.

Ntldr and Boot.ini are hidden or protected system files. If you want to see them in an Explorer window you need to, choose Tools > Folder Options > click the View tab, and deselect the Hide Protected Operating System Files check box. Also choose Show Hidden Files and Folders. WinXpFix.com

To Editing Boot.ini: You can edit the Boot.ini file by using one of three Windows programs: The System Properties dialog box (fewer choices), the System Configuration Utility (displays the whole file for editing), or Notepad.

How~2 Start MS-DOS Directly:

To start MS-DOS directly: Choose Win 95 or Win 98 or Win Me from the menu on the boot loader screen, and then press ENTER.

To start MS-DOS, press F4.

Another way to start the three operating systems is to configure your computer to multiple boot Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Windows 95 or Windows 98 or Windows Me and then start MS-DOS from an MS-DOS bootable floppy disk. If you multiple boot Windows XP, Windows 2000 and MS-DOS, or Windows NT and MS-DOS, you can install Windows 95 or Windows 98 by using the procedure in the following section.

How~2 Start MS-DOS from Windows 95 or Windows 98

To start MS-DOS from Windows 95 or Windows 98: On the View menu in My Computer or Windows Explorer, click Options or Folder Options .

Click Show All Files on the Options tab, and then click OK .

In the list of files, double-click the Msdos.sys file.

On the File menu, click Properties .

In the Attributes section on the General tab, click to clear both the Read-Only and Hidden check boxes, and then click OK .

Open the Msdos.sys file by using a text editor (such as Notepad).

Add the following line to the [Options] section of the Msdos.sys file:

BootMulti=1
Save the file, and then close the file.
